From Instructor Derek Heckmann:
I received my bachelor’s in fine arts with a concentration in studio art specializing in ceramics in 2012. After school, I moved to North Carolina with an interest in pursuing an MFA degree in ceramics. 2014 I had a life-changing accident that left me with a TBI. As a result, I lost the ability to do many things I was previously able to do not the least of which was having to reteach myself everything I’d learned about ceramics just two years prior. After years of self-study, I found an opportunity to teach ceramics and I jumped at the chance. I taught ceramics to individuals with disabilities for five years and found it to be an incredible opportunity that helped me grow and learn as an artist more than I could have ever hoped.
